The Minds Behind a Growing Facebook Fad

The Minds Behind a Growing Facebook Fad

I know that I’ve seen these illustrations and one-liner jokes a lot on Facebook.  What originally caught my eye was the style of illustration.  Interesting read in the Wall Street Journal on the company  behind the latest viral craze in social media. The Online Joke Machine Amid the comics and pundits churning out rapid response one-liners from the political conventions is the team at Someecards, a digital-greeting-card company that riffs on current events in e-cards that people are sharing online across social media sites. By the...

Has PowerPoint Met its Match?

It doesn’t look like infographics are going away anytime soon.  That’s why tools that produce great and effective designs for infographic presentations always catch my eye.  I was also intrigued by the question this article posed – “Here at Co.Design, we wondered if their free service could replace PowerPoint as the dominant tool for visual storytelling.” Read about this new tool called Visual.ly Redesign at FastCoDesign.com — Today, the company unveiled a major redesign that adds social functionality,...

Microsoft Gets a Lesson in Logo Design

Admittedly, I’m not a Windows user, so I’m not much involved in the world of Microsoft except for monitoring my son’s Xbox time, but I was surprised to learn that Microsoft has redesigned their logo eight times over the last 26 years.  Who noticed?  Maybe that’s the problem. Here’s a great article about a design student who decided to give Microsoft yet another logo makeover.  He might be on to something.  It’s one more great example of how keeping things simple in a logo can make a world of difference....

Colors Matter When it Comes to Your Brand

Sometimes I get clients who are so concerned about the shape of their logo that they completely ignore the importance of the colors they should choose.  Here are some interesting statistics and a great infographic from CreativePile.com on just how critical the choice of colors is when you’re finding your corporate identity. In short, studies have shown that a product’s color influences 60-80% of a customer’s purchasing decision, meaning color can make or break a product. So now for some cool facts; 95% of the world’s top brands...

From NYTimes: Building a Brand When You Can’t Afford an Ad Agency

Great article on how to build a business and a brand the old-fashioned way.  You have to love the way he talks about label design.  Of course, if you need a label for your product, Laurie McDonald Design is ready to help. From The New York Times – Building a Brand When You Can’t Afford an Ad Agency “I did the label and logo myself in Corel Draw and picked the fanciest font I could find — Lucida Calligraphy in bold italic. I was dating this vegetarian girl at the time and she went with me to the printer and insisted I use a...

A Lesson in Design from Ikea Food Packaging

I think this quote from the article says it all – You know you’re a crack designer when you manage to make anchovy-style sprat fillets look appetizing. So it was when Ikea tapped Stockholm Design Lab, the wizards behind this excellent pharmacy rebrand, to refresh the packaging of its gourmet food recently. Read the rest of the article at...

A Different Take on Movie Posters

A Different Take on Movie Posters

Summertime.  The season for blockbuster movies.  I’ve always found the clever (and even the not so clever) art of movie posters intriguing.  Designed to catch your attention as you quickly pass by, I often wonder how in the world they manage to visually capture the look and theme of a movie in a print. I came across this article and found the minimalist design of 20 famous movie posters to be overwhelming evidence that, when it comes to design, less can be so much more.  Something I always like to keep in mind as I work on projects...
